Nature Table

To inspire the children’s interest in all the Cultural subjects.

Age: 2.5 years old

The Nature Table should be the focus in a Montessori classroom. It is there to inspire the children’s interest in all the Cultural subjects – Geography, Botany, Zoology, History and Science!

The table should be larger than the regular-sized tables used by the children. It should be located in an area in the classroom where the children have room to walk around the table and examine aspects of the earth and their world.

Children should be encouraged to bring in interesting “nature” items, as well as artifacts from countries around the world. They should be presented during group time with their classmates, then placed on the “Nature Table” for everyone to examine.

The teacher should be sure that there are always items of interest on the Nature Table, and that they are rotated on a regular basis.

A magnifying glass should be kept in a basket on the table for children to examine the items in more detail.
